Well, here's one of my Constantine I's (that I happen to mention in another thread), and I am having the same problem jw had with his Constantine: I can't make out the last letter in the mintmark - CONS(?). I know it's probably going to be impossible with that gunk in the way, but maybe we'll get it.

Certainly looks that way, 'H' would make it RIC VII Constantinople 59. 'H.' would make it RIC VII Constantinople 73.

I cant really see any of the other possibilities fitting, namely:

CONSA
CONSB
CONS gamma
CONS delta
CONS theta
CONSA dot
CONSB dot
CONS delta dot
CONS gamma dot

It really resembles this one right here, and it happens to be an RIC 59: http://www.coinscatalog.com/coin_vi...int=42373210

But it has gamma though.

How about "CONSH"? I'm not sure, but maybe?

JW

I guess I was late in answering, eh? I did the same as Bobbyhelmet and narrowed down the possibilities. I think "H" is the only possible answer.

I enhanced you image a bit but I can't make it out. Are you able to remove any of the dirt that's covering it?

That gunk looks practically bonded to the coin itself. And the coin is paper thin, so I don't want to try anything in case the coin breaks.

I just realized I think I may have a similar coin and wanted to post the images to see what you think of the mintmark being possibly what yours might be. Mine I have attributed as Constantine I AE Follis, RIC VII 59, struck at RIC VII 59:

OBV: CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG, rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right
REV: GLORIA EXERCITVS, two soldiers standing front, holding spears & shields, two standards between them, CONSH in ex

This is one of the 12 coins I purchased last week from a Spanish seller.

After looking at it closely (I think I saw the outline of the lower half of the H under the gunk, but could be my imagination), and after looking at jw's coin, I'm more convinced than ever that it's an H. Thanks guys!
