I reckon the Bidiots are the ones that are missing something, for eg:
A few bricks short of a load.
More than one Kangaroo missing from the top paddock.
A few sandwiches short of a picnic.

Seller knows exactly what he's selling! I reckon once this one goes, he'll make some more! He's got 3 bidders so far, so there'll be 2 underbidders (suckers) who will be sure to bid on his next 'rarity'.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

I think he knows what he is doing. Too detailed with the smoke and mirrors to not be very clear on the intention

Why the heck would the same bidder raise the bid on himself by a whole dollar, I ask?

Libertad,
I am pretty sure what you are describing happens if someones maximum bid is higher than the amount that they are currently winning the auction at and someone else makes a bid which is lower that their maximum bid.
Eg
Item is starting at 99c
Person A bids $5. They will be winning the auction at 99c
Person B bids $1.50 and person A will automatically be winning at $2.
