I was curious to see what everyone thought of this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1884-CANADA...em2568313254The coin looks like a beauty...maybe not AU, but probably EF40. Is $500 too much for 1884 Obverse 1 large cent? I understand people used to pick these off at $20 a piece, but it would probably be difficult to pull that off now Edited by canadian-varieties 10/14/2011 1:21 pm

Nice coin. Definitely an EF. So tough to get. I couldn't understand for years why it wasn't priced higher. Just like I can't understand why the 1891 SD series is so pricy. The SD coin is far more common than trends allow.

What controls the price is demand. By the fact that you are showing this auction to everyone in two coin forums, your gut instinct must be telling you it is too high, otherwise you would have snapped up the coin for a "great deal"... Two years ago, this coin was impossible to find in grades above F. That has changed, I think more and more are coming out of the woodwork, and the price is probably stabilizing somewhat now.

TCNC has had one in MS-62RB for a couple of years now for about $3200.00, so they are out there...

I would let it ride. The seller might post it again for a much lower starting bid if there is no interest shown.

Sure, it is quite a pricy coin, but not out-of-this-world pricy ... also, the indicated prices in the last two editions of the Charlton catalogue show its catalogue-value is increasing:
64th Edition (2010) => $875 for AU-50 and $325 for EF
65th Edition (2011) => $1200 for AU-50 and $650 for EF
... so depending upon how much weight you give the Charlton catalogue's basic pricing tables, $500 is certainly "in the ballpark", right?

Well...I consider this to be a "down" period for Canadian coins...perhaps one of the worst in a very long time...
95% of sales in "Canadian coins" is bullion. And that's absolutely terrible.
A buyers market, a crest period...buyers are very scarce..

I'd consider buying the coin if it was priced at $400.00 and if it was ICCS certified.

How high of a ICCS grade would it need?

Zonad, it would've needed an EF-40 for me to make a move at $400.00, but that ship has sailed...the coin sold for about $550.00.

Yep...it found willing buyers....
1884 obv 1 is a bit of an oddity...scarce but not rare (I can think of two dozen Vickies rarer than it)...and the fat footed N is marginally interesting...
that being said, its one of the best known varieties...thus the premium...but as a variety, its not particularly exciting.

Thanks for the heads up on that one. It is an upgrade for me.

Great! I picked up a VF in a lot for about $100, unattributed...so that's a good start for me...I figured I'd spend the extra $450 elsewhere

CCCS EF45? Nicely done, Randy. Hope it's a hard slab? I sent the one I bought at Torex for $320 to ICG...hoping it comes back an EF40 or EF45...:) Still wonder how much it would have cost me to wrestle this one from you.
