Some back ground first. About 2 years ago I got a pile of crud encased lumps that may or may not have been coins. They have been sitting in olive oil since then. These are the fist two to show any detail at all though not very much. Is it enough to identify them and or assign a value if any to them. The other 48 are just beginning to look coinish...     |

Not a lot to go on there, but we'll give it a try. How about providing the weight and measurement if you can. You may need to let them soak longer. I might point you to the thread on his discussion board about the cleaning of ancients. They've been talking about a faster method of cleaning these old crusty coins.

Am I seeing things, but on the third image I think I see a pyramid shape, but my eyes may be playing tricks on me.

First coin 1.9grams and about the size of a dime
Second coin 2.2 grams thick and about half the size of a dime.

I just don't think there is enough to go on to attribute. I would say that the first coin appears to be a 4th century coin, and likely what I would refer to as a Constantine era coin. If that is correct and unless there is something spectacularly rare under the remaining dirt, the value will be fairly low. $2-5 at best is my guess. But never give up. There may be something about the coin that will make it skyrocket once the crude is completely off. Besides, value is only one aspect. For many of us, the satisfaction of first cleaning and then attributing is an important aspect as well. I'll keep trying as I know others are doing as we speak. In the meantime, put them babies back in to soak a little longer.  JW |

The first one is most probably Valentinian I (DN VALENTINI-ANVS PF AVG).
The reverse could be SECVRITAS-REIPVBLICAE an I would guess at the mintmark containing 'CO' meaning its probably from Arles or Constantinople.
Cant really say much more, sorry - I cant make anything out on the second coin.

I'm totally serious. Look closely at the upper left corner. There is what looks like an outline of one.

Could be an ancient or medieval Indian coin (since the swastika was a commonly used Hindu symbol).

Well I put the others in Hydrogen peroxide 3percent but very few bubbles. I guess that means that all the crud is already gone I'll leave them for a couple of days to see if there is any change.

Jangofett: I see what you are referring to, but I wonder if it's not like looking at clouds and picking out shapes. If it is a swastika, then you may be on to something. I'm just not convinced that once cleaned the swastika will still be there. JW P.S. Stay away from that funny weed, man! You'll end up looking like  . |

Good images, but...... I really can't make out anything of value. I turned the coin 360 degrees and still nothing. When I look at the second image with the flan crack at 4 o'clock, I think I may see a draped and cuirassed bust right, but it just as well may be my imagination. At least I tried, eh?

The device on the left of the first pic that looks like an arrow could be an anchor with a figure just to the right of it. Laetitia or Annonia maybe, unfortunately I think this coin is too far gone to ever know for certain.
