I'm a total coin newbie, but I found this coin in a new house's attic and I wanted to know what it is. It seems to be silver, and it is about an inch and a quarter in diameter and is inscribed with kanji (i think?) on the back. Please speak in terms I can understand so I don't look like this: Please and thank you! images below:

I believe that this is a modern "fantasy" coin. The design is possibly based on what some of the real Chinese coins looked like. It looks like just a novelty piece. I don't think that it's silver either. I could be wrong though.

It's a modern Chinese zodiac charm.

The large Chinese character in the middle is fu which means "good fortune" or "happiness".

There are 12 Chinese characters surrounding the fu character. These are the "12 Earthly Branches". Each one of these characters is associated with one of the animals of the Chinese zodiac.

The other side of the charm displays a snake which is one of the zodiac animals.

This piece is almost certainly one of a set of 12 pieces with the other 11 pieces representing the other members of the zodiac.

If interested, I explain in more detail the "12 Earthly Branches" and the animals of the Chinese zodiac at Ancient Chinese Zodiac Charms.
