Well, I have a couple of horses, but now I have a winged horse, a centaur, and a stag. I just found the stag in my coins this afternoon when I was looking through for duplicates to send Jangofett. I guess I'm on my way to having a regular zoo.  (I just love these emoticons). JW |

Congratulations, I'm glad to hear you got the coin for under 30 dollars with the seller paying the shipping costs. It's a beautiful coin and I can tell you first hand, it will look even better in person. I love ancients that depict Pegasus.

Having looked through the link Doucet provided, I have some additional questions about this coin. First, are the two lines behind Pegasus representative of reins/harness and can anyone tell if Pegasus is harnessed? Second, what is the mint
letter in exergue? The seller said "N", but I think it looks more like "A" especially after looking through Doucet's link.

Good link Doucet - interesting stuff. It explains something I posted in a similar thread about the zoo coins perhaps being used to appease the gods. If its correct and I'm reading it correctly it means JWs mintmark is probably a poorly formed 'A' rather than an 'N'? Or perhaps its one of the "wrong" officina marked coins? Finding out these coins perhaps have an overall 'strategy' or 'order' to them makes me far more interested in them and far more likely to collect them. When I was recently investigating the minting of Constantines Sols I found out a few similar types of things and it greatly increased my interest in those. 9 more coins added to the wanted list Edited by bobbyhelmet

JW - I somehow missed your earlier post regarding the A/N and the lines behind Pegasus.
I think your right about it being an 'A', I also agree that the lines behind Pegasus do appear to be some kind of harness, unfortunately I'm not familiar enough with these coins to add anymore - will see what I can dig up on the web.

According to these charts the officina mark on JW's coin should be an A. I have found that A's often look like H's......which sometimes look like N's? |

Well - I've had a good look about and I cant see any Pegasus coins with any detail behind the horse. Maybe its just a trick of the light or a little bit of damage. Have a look when you have it in hand. Having looked at lot of these coins I can certainly see the appeal of them, the die cutters 'style' seems to come across much, much more on the animals rather than on the more traditional personifications. I'm really starting to appreciate certain die cutters now, they can make a big, big difference between coins with the exact same RIC numbers, and the prices I would be prepared to pay to own them. Like the Constantine you posted recently JW: https://goccf.com/t/100103Essentially its a common, small Constantine (I know you wont mind me saying that) but the accuracy, proportions and posture of the bust is, I think, remarkable. Clearly whoever cut the die was at the 'top of his game' to produce something so life-like and even 'animated'. I'd pay a premium for that coin that many people might not understand. In the future I think I'll be purchasing coins for different reason than in the past. |

I've already changed my strategies somewhat as of late and the appearance or die cutters abilities is one of those changes. Now back to Pegasus. In the link Doucet sent there was a statement that caught my eye and made me look hard for the reins: " and there's also a rare variant that shows the horse facing right and reins being clearly visible." That is why I asked the question in the first place. I just don't know where to go to get any further information on this possible rarity. Perhaps Doucet knows. JW |

On the left facing example I looked at it seemed to be reins around the nose, we need to try and find an picture of the Cunetio 'right' to see if they extend behind the horse. |

This was a French link that bobbyhelmet gave us in a previous post about the centaur. If you scroll down about 3/4 the way there are a couple of coins with an animal with what looks to be raines. OK the new one works. But even so I don't see any reins. And, if you look at the first Pegasus coin, the same lines appear behind Pegasus, so it may all mean nothing.
