Having missed out on an auction I'd been watching for 9 days (hate it when other people spot my bargins) I felt like I needed to buy something. I found the following cuff-links with coins set into them, an odd route to go when buying coins but hey, I like a gamble and they look fun whatever they turn out to be.

Described as 'Fake 1960s Roman Coin Cuff-links' but were being sold by a seller who has no other coins for sale so who knows, they certainly look genuine. I also think if your going to fake a coin for some cuff-links you would fake a more valuable one than a pair of Constantine Sols (I'm guessing the reverse is Sol solely from the busts).

Have a guess and I'll let you know when they arrive

The only picture they were sold with is below and no other info was given about them.

Wow, yeah, those do look good! I just hope that they can be easily separated from the rest of the cuff link (And that they have not been soldered in any way.

$14 shipped, cant go wrong really - I suspect a German bidder was thinking the same as me as the price shot up at the end. The bottom one looks very Trier but the top one I cant decide between Arles and maybe Lyon.

I'm betting Arles on the top coin. If they prove out to be authentic, you will have two nice coins. They are well centered and evenly struck for sure. And because both look too good to be real, I'll be the old grump and say they are fakes, even though the bottom coin looks like it may have had some sort of BD in the upper right hand corner.

I'm hoping they are genuine, bobbyhelmet, I really am. If for no other reason than to know there are still outstanding coins to be had for a fair price.

The quality and character of the lettering in the legend looks TOO good to me.
I am NOT saying it is a fake, it just leaves me a bit doubtful.

Nice find bobbyhelmet,

Looks like a prong setting so you should be able to remove them with no damage.

I hope they have great reverses also.

Well - arrived today, they are real and they are both Sols!

Posted some new pics as they have some very nice features - particularly like the circle of dots on Constantines Cuirass on the coin on the left. The left coin is from Lyon and not as I thought Trier. The Coin on the right is from Ticinum which I didn't expect but is nice as its one of the less common coins. The mounts look like silver by the way they have tarnished but cant find any hallmarks. One of the mounts is a little bent but otherwise they are fine and the coins have been mounted using prongs as Doucet thought.

Real-Or-Fake---A-Bit-Of-Fun

Left: IMP CONSTANTINVS AVG -- SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI -- T F -- PLG -- RIC VII Lyons 20 -- 314-315
The reverse is not great on this one but could clean up well, wont know if I dont pop it out.

Right: IMP CONSTANTINVS PF AVG -- SOLI INVI-C-TO COMITI -- P/T/S Dot T -- RIC VII Ticinum 21 -- 314-315
Needs a good clean but the reverse looks as good quality as the obverse, cant tell for sure which workshop atm due to the mount covering the area I need to see.

Those are pretty cool.

Maybe you should just wear them when you dress up to go out.

Great for conversation.

Nice find ..........and with the silver as well!

Hey Bobbyhelmet, since I have to dress up now and again for work, how about selling me these at the same price you got them? Better yet, why don't you just gift them to me old friend?

Haha - afraid not mate, as Doucet say they are pretty cool, I think these will be brightening up the ever increasing number of boring weddings I'm currently being invited to!

I actually have a 3rd 'killer deal' to go with this one and the 'Galerius? Maximian? Diocletian!' one, I'll post it later this evening if I get time

ebay has provided some happy hunting recently!
