Quote: Do they have these with the clamp instead of the table top base? To attach to my copy stand base. No, but: http://www.amazon.com/Ikea-Jansjo-F...14481&sr=1-4Keep in mind, though - they'll probably best serve you freestanding. There's plenty of gooseneck to arrange as you wish. The base attaches with two screws from the bottom - the gooseneck itself is what's female-threaded, so you could attach them permanently through your copystand base if you wanted.

Thanks Dave! I should have started at the OP and read through them all. Just checked and the Dallas store has "one" of these lamps.

North Dallas is where I got mine! They had stacks of them up in the bedroom area, and a bunch more in bulk area by the checkout stands a couple of months ago. @ $9.99, I bought two and have been impressed with the quality of the goosenecks, plenty of length and the hold posistion quite well.

I have never been to the Minneapolis IKEA where I didn't see at least a few hundred on end units, in the lighting, by the photo frames, by the furniture, etc. These little lamps are very popular, and rightfully so. At $9.99 a pop, they are a steal.
I was at IKEA last weekend, and I grabbed two more. I currently use 3 for my imaging, and I wanted to have a couple spares "just in case". One thing (maybe it's already been said) they do come in other colors besides black. But, I STRONGLY recommend getting the black ones as you don't have as many problems with reflection if you shoot any coins in slabs or in plastic capsules/holders.

Oooh, nice point on the reflectivity! Since you guys have these lamps already, another question. Are the lights one large diameter LED or an array of them?

They are one diode per lamp, with a reflective cone to disperse the light into about a 90 degree spread. I've taken a picture of the side view of the light, and a top view of the inside diode part of the light for you.

Ok, thanks. I saw some LED lamps similar to these, however they have a LED array of about 9 (3x3) or 16 (4x4) tiny LEDs. They wanted twenty something dollars a piece for them. Dallas does not seem that far away...(google map - plotting coordinates)

I finally made it to the IKEA at Dallas-Denton, the place looks an awful lot like the OVVIO in Pordenone, Italy. I just went in got the Jansjo lamps (three black ones, although they now have PINK) and headed back to the house. Time will tell if I can get them positioned properly. The price at Dallas-Denton was 12.99 each. Oh well that did not keep me from buying them.

Really nice Nickel and photos. What are the light positions?
Clock positions Height above coin Angle vs horizontal
You seem to have nailed a good position to have excellent shadow and surface detail.
But you need to rotate the reverse a bit clockwise...Ray

That was from a genuine unsearched roll... they are all toners. There were maybe 15 gems and this is one of the nicer ones. Thanks.
As for lighting...
I would say one and 5 oclock
diffused with something like your smile diffusers
the heads were slightly angled to place the lights as near to right above the coin as possible and only say 3 inches above coin
It was a bit difficult to give this coin enough soft light to show the toning yet show a bit of the blazing luster.
taken with a 70mm Sigma DG EX Macro (extremely sharp lens) F9, 1/30th sec
Oops.. I linked to a coin that I had not rotated... :)
