I would like to get a few bust half dollars(1807-1839)for my collection, nothing high grade, probably VF-EF at most. I was reading somewhere that those type of halves were conterfeited quite a bit back in the day. Do I really need to be concerned about buying raw coins, or should I buy only certified coins? I don't know how prevalent conterfeit bust halves are, or if they are easily recognizable by studying them carefully. Thanks.

Some of the counterfeits from back in the 1800's are worth more than the originals. Bust halves are a great coin to collect. I suggest reading as much as you can about them and looking at as many as you can before buying. Then start by buying from a "known" dealer, I believe several of the people here on the forum sell Bust halves. And by all means have fun.

The contemporary counterfeit bust halves are also quite collectible (There si a standard reference book on them as well.) Contemporary counterfeits are not that commonly available, probably well less than .1% of all the bust halves encountered. There are also modern counterfeits but they are not that great a problem yet.

The bust halves are one of my favorite groups. I just recently discovered the link to 32 Days of Capped Bust half dollarshttps://goccf.com/t/72542#72542You should definitely check it out. I'm a new member and am sorry I wasn't around when it was active. I have a decent grouping that I would have loved to share.

This EXACT series of coins is what has brought me into collecting. My family collected as then did I. I had never seen one of these until I received our collection from my grandfather. I thought this was the most interesting coin I'd ever seen. I too am new to this forum and would really like to see (and drool at) everyone's collections. I have looked into higher grades, just way too pricey for us. We have 9 currently between 20 to 45 in grading. If I ever get enough $$$$$ this is the ONE collection I want to put together. There is just so much to know in this series compared to others I'm working on with so many varieties but I have read through many threads here and there is a lot of knowledge in the forum. Anyone wanting to put together a month of Bust Halves can count me in for sure.

Bust Halves are my favorites. If I buy a raw coin of considerable value I post it to this forum of incredible experts for review. So far, no problems. Quote: Moe said - I wouldn't mind revisiting them in the future... Thanks Moe - I'm ready!

Moe - I know you are in the middle of the 2/3/20 forum. I'll jump in at the end but I second the motion to resurrect the 32 days of bust halves.

Bust halfs are my favorite coins, with all the different varities one could spend a life time trying to complete this series. I buy raw coins all the time and have not come across any counterfeits from this series. If you buy on e-bay buy from someone that sells coins and stay away from any sellers in China.

the only bust halves I collect are the old counterfeits, you likely wont have to worry about ending up with one, as there are many other collectors looking for them and they usually go for a pretty penny. the chinese counterfeits are very deceptive, that is until you put it on a scale.
