Hello all, Looking for opinions on pattern coins...as in what those of you who like or own them would suggest buying. looking near the bottom of the financial scale as I have limits. I have ordered the 10th Edition on the pattern coins RedBook but haven't gotten it yet. Also another question...anyone think they are overrated and not worth pursuing? If so, why? Any suggestions on what to buy instead? Any opinions/comments are appreciated as they will help me with future decisions. Edited by mdh157 10/17/2011 10:38 pm

Can't say I knew anything about Pattern Coins until your post so I read up on em. Interesting and some very beautiful patterns have been produced over the years, very small mintages and very much outside my $$ range.
Best of Luck to you MDH, whichever way you proceed.

Not sure what the overall consensus might be, but I bought a few 1c patterns. Interested in hearing how some of the more experienced collectors and experts might answer your questions. Personally, I think they are an intriguing part of coin history but they can be very pricey. I bought them because I liked them, but I'm not sure about their overall popularity and/or demand. Have a 1854 P1C J-161 & 1855 P1C J-168. https://goccf.com/t/97550Also picked up a private pattern 1837 Feuchtwanger 1C recently. Since I'm a big fan of the cents, I thought they made a great addition to my collection.

They certainly are interesting, especially the gold ones But I think they would be even more expensive if more people were into them, but they're not into them in the first place because they are expensive. Catch-22 is it? Still really cool. I would love to own some but I know almost nothing about them

I love pattern coins. They aren't to popular because not alot of people know that they are even an option to buy. Rayman311, I am extremely jealous of your 1855 pattern I have been looking for one of them for a really long time.

Some patterns are relatively common. There wase a large production of ECU pattern coins, which are considered to be the fore runners to the EURO coins.
Some are extremely rare and are known by unique examples only. This category includes experimental development or preliminary designs.
I have an example from both categories.

Coindog: there is an 1855 FE Pattern on ebay right now in PF-62. There is a lot of interesting stuff on ebay. I'd even bet there are some pattern coins floating around out there that are unknown to their owners. Back in 2006 I had the pleasure of stumbling upon a coin museum (I want to say it was ANA but can't remember for sure) a little south of Denver. they had the most gorgeous collection of US coins that I had ever seen. It included several patterns. This summer I'll get to the Smithsonian to see theirs. I just found a site that is totally dedicated to pattern collecting. Not sure if i'd be out of line by posting the URL so I won't, but it looks to have a lot of info.

The flying eagle patterns are my favorite and I think they all look stunning. Rick Snow usually has a few for sale for a billion dollars per coin. I hope to own one one day.

There are definitely some beautiful patterns out there, I've always loved gold patterns, especially the 1836"Liberty cap" design (which apparently was reused for a pattern silver 3c piece in the 1850's).

Yeah that was the ANA museum for sure then. I went like 5 years ago when they had one of the 1913 Liberty nickels. Needless to say it was awesome.
