Hi aladinslamp, I wonder if you would mind explaining a bit further on your statement: "Au 50, backs a bit rough...Looks like a Vam2A die chips next to the stars." you were commenting on my 1879cc. would it be ethical to unslab ? I can't for the life of me figure out why they wouldn't grade it.

Hi, My comments are for the VAM 2A for your coin...the Morgan series is known for die variety errors, yours is seen to have the slight die chips left of the date and next to the 1st, and 2nd stars as shown on vamworld, listed known die varieties...Au 50 for a grade as the chest is round and not flat..general guidlines could be AU58 all feathers present slight wear..AU55 almost all chest feathers present and wear..AU53 chest feathers present much wear..AU50..Rounded chest no feathers , No wear on wings meaning obvious flattening of detail on the wings which will show up on EF coins....and AU is known circulated coin rating...shy by some points to make an UNC coin..in this case the back has many abbrasion marks due to its circulation but not enough to make it an EF coin...Also one must realize today's grading standards are stringent...Meaning many an AU58 coin has full chest full chest feathers and yours has none. the abbrasions are common to this condition and of no concern to the coins validity.. its a fine coin..it only locks it into a fair grade level all would accept.... I would put it in my collection all day long, but its a bit out of my price range....Very nice coin and thanks for sharing...

I forgot to mention about the slabbing...This is a valuable coin..If I remember correctly its about a $1500 coin....If you bought it for $1500 and it cost you $50 to get a gradeable coin your investment holds water....Ask a local dealer if he thinks there are any problems which would body bag the submission..For $50 its worth knowing the coins true the grade and value in the market place..Its a sought after coin..!The plastic holder insures the future buyer its a good coin..and NO DON"T use the cheep basement grading services....The top 3 or 4 would be PCGS, ANACS, ICG and SEGS ANACS will know your coin's VAM its all good...some of the others are not all yet in line with the VAM thing...yet yours is a known VAM...hope this helps...

Thanks for that level of description. I am going to go to VAM world, as you suggest, because I can't yet see what you refer to..is it a feature of the star? or near the star?. Is it to the left as I face the coin.. at 6.30? As I mentioned, the coin has come back as genuine but upgradable. No mention of VAM. I don't feel they were fare to say it was cleaned. Not on my watch..nor my wife's dad's watch. I am at a loss as to what to do. Unfortunately I have to sell our collection.

send it in to NGC with attribution that way you will get it attributed and a details grade.

The reason they stated it was cleaned is it appears there are hairline scratches on the back as well as hazing around the letters, stars, numbers, eagle and olives. With all that it could mean it was overdipped or wiped at some point. This could have happened 50 years ago or more. The coin doesn't appear to be harshly cleaned however the evidence is there of a cleaning. ANACS would also be another good option they will give a details grade as well and attribution. I bought one of these that was graded VF 35 cleaned by ANACS and busted it out of the case. This was after taking it to a few dealers and getting their opinion. based on the condition they felt it was actually worth much more out of the slab than in the slab because of the cleaned designation and also because there was next to no indication that the coin had been cleaned in the past. I would say that this would be an AU 50 to 53 coin....cleaning knocks it down a notch to XF money.

in between the, neck point and the 1 is a small bump or die chip also to the left of the 3 stars on the left, The last picture shows "staining or spotting" around the stars.. and date, which in some previous life would have been toning.. which was removed at one point and a common practice by many years ago to have those blast white coins available for collectors....I believe PCGS just announced they will be giving out a details grade for coins like this, a new service they are offering..

I see what you are looking at with regards to the dye mark.. are you also looking at the tiny triangle in back of the third star on the profile side of the face? Thanks for spending the time..most grateful.

Gene, I see you did not list NGC in your list of top 3-4 TPGs. Any reason? Just curious. Jim

To have the grading services put the VAM, you have to pay a fee on top of the grading fees to have them attribute it for you. ANACS will attribute all known VAM's while PCGS and NGC will only attribute some. Unfortunately PCGS and NGC will only attribute vam-3 for this date so assuming that this is vam-2A, they will not put that attribution on the holder. As for the cleaning, I think they gave that opinion because of the hairlines and slight difference in luster between the protected areas around the letters and the more open areas around the eagle. Cleaned or not, this coin is still valuable and should be slabbed by one of the major services in order to get top dollar.

It's a lot nicer than the one I posted about a week back. Would trade you even up anytime. And aladinslamp - thanks for the info on vamworld. Have it bookmarked so I can research my CC's.
