There is still a lot of detecting going on in the traditional Australian goldfields. Is there much current activity happening in the Californian goldfields?

Most Australian detectorists seem to be mainly motivated by the finding of natural gold nuggets.

There is a specialist magazine available for Australian detectorists:

'Gold Gem and Treasure', available at most book stands.

Congrats Sel on 2000 posts!

There are gold fields up in Northern California. In Southern California, the only gold fields are in the desert. The nuggets in the desert here are quite small compared to the ones you can find in the golden triangle down under. I have only been hunting for nuggets twice and have never found any . I stick to the beaches. It's a closer drive for me and I always find something. Vermontensium, what detector do you have and where do you normally detect?

Ha,
It's a Whites GMT. I have found nuggets with it in Arizona and So. Cal.
I want to start looking in parks although I did take it to the beach once and found $6 in change. I know its a gold machine but still works for coins :-)
I just dont know the laws around here for park detecting.

I have a White's Goldmaster II the older brother of the GMT. I also have a few others. I have metal detected a few parks and schools and have not had any problem. I do feel like everyone is watching me though. Just make sure to fill your holes completely. That's why I like the beach, no one cares if you metal detect. What sucks though is that a ton of people will ask you if you have found anything. I have tried the desert, but I was only using a Tesoro Lobo which doesn't get as small of nuggets as the Goldmaster does. I might be able to meet up one of these days depending on where you are at. PM me if you are interested. Good hunting!
