Just received two email notifications of the new design for the 2012 UK Gold Sovereign

2012-UK-Gold-Sovereign-Design

Prices range from £130 for the 1/4 Sovereign to £495 for the full Sovereign.

Hmm, interesting, I am not in the market for non-circulating coins, and am certainly don't earn enough to buy this sort of thing, but I like it!

My question about modern sovereigns has always been, are they worth the money?

The Royal Mint does not explain how much gold is in them like an American Eagle or Krugerrand in terms on an ounce or what fractional amount of an ounce they have in gold.

So to me they always seemed more expensive than similar size gold coins made by other mints, am I right about this?

If it helps at all...

1/4 sov is just marginally under 2g of 22k
1/2 sov is just marginally under 4g of 22k
full sov is just marginally under 8g of 22k

Norm
(sorry, just not a fan at all of this 2012 design - absolutely hate the date not being at the bottom)

Hi.

First time poster here with question.

Can anyone that owns a 2012 Sovereign (full) verify if it is ever so slightly smaller than older versions? Thanks.

Kena asks "are they worth their money" and I say they are worth their weight in gold!

You say that the mint doesn't state how much they weigh but it is common knowledge and the spot price is the bottom line value.

Personally I find them quite attractive but most of the from the last 100 years I wouldnt credit as being worth much more than the gold content (I would love to own the tudor rose design one from the 1980's and I know there are a few rarer dates which I would overpay on but ultimately most of them I just see as worth scrap value)

I think they are as good an investment as anything if bought right because gold tends to go up and when it is high like at present 100's of them are getting melted every day... so perhaps the survivors will be worth something in times to come...
