Hi everyone,

Im having a hard time figuring this one out.. according to coins-of-the-uk.co.uk, this is how you can tell if it is the rare non-h variety:

The identifiable features of the genuine non "H" 1882 penny are a flat shield on the reverse, NOT convex. Victoria has an apparent hooked nose, caused by a weak die strike in the area of the eyeball. The "R" and the "I" in "BRITT" should not be joined; a very small space should be visible with a magnifier.

There is a tuft of hair protruding from the back of the neck, left of the ribbon knot. This tuft of hair is always visible on very worn specimens. The "H" variety can be clarified by examining the space encapsulated by the inner ribbon, as if the uppermost section forms a point in this triangulated section, then it is the common variety. The rare non "H" does not terminate in a point because of the tuft of hair mentioned above.

What do you guys think?

I think it is an H... the small smudge just below the 88 in the date is where I would expect to see the H. (on some years it is placed far left of the 1)

I think it's an H because that year 7,526,400 1882H were minted and 1882 is not listed in my book, only the H variety was minted that year apparently (as is the case for 1876....)

I just went to your site, it quotes it as "extremely rare" the little book I checked it doesn't list it at all (and generally it lists all varieties possible)

Anyway, then I checked spinks, it too doesn't list 1882 without an H either...

So then I checked my pennies and I have an 1882 penny in even worse shape than yours but the H is clearly visable... So now I am in doubt....
