I wonder could you help. I found a coin, young queen victoria head with a seated brittania with shield on the obverse. I cant identify it. I believe it is gold and it is approximately 3.4 cm in diameter. badly pitted and worn on the back as it was found in a river. any assistance would be welcome. apologies for the pic quality

these links have pictures for you of what the coin would of looked like before it washed down the river :)

No value based on the condition of your coin other than what you personally value it at. It would be a cool story for the grandkids one day, let them know you found this treasure in a river!

Hi, thank you for taking the time to reply. I live in Northern Ireland and found it in the river foyle. one of my hobbies is metal detecting and I have quite a few coins, some hammered, and its unlikely its a penny based on the weight, thickness and colour.

I took a few pictures of some old british pennies I inherited from my great grandfather.

They are the same size as the one you show above. My guess is that while your coin was in the river, it has years upon years of stuff rubbing up against it, making it shiney in some spots and un-recognizable in others..here are the pics I took...

If you look at the obverse of the 1891 ( the british soldier with shield ) it is starting to get that goldish color from rubbing other coins over a century ( 30 of those years it stood still in one spot in a closet at my great-aunts )

It looks the correct size for a half penny. Original composition would have been bronze which could look gold if its been in the water a long time.

Imotep... that is not merely some British soldier with a shield :P It is Britannia who is a female personification of the country and is usually pictured with a trident in hand.

The original image though is so out of focus it is hard to know what the coin is, maybe it is so thick with lime-scale the actual details are not visable or its just that the picture is blurry. From that photo its could be anything; true it is the approximate dimensions of an English Penny but there are plenty of coins a similar size (I have Guernsey, Ireland and South African coins all that size amongst others) So I feel that any conclusions made will be merely speculation from the evidence offered so far.
