Hello everyone,

Here's the situation: An online seller is offering at auction five lots each of which consist of one (1) Mexican 2 reales. The dates are 1858, 1861, 1863, 1863, and 1867. The kicker, however, is that there is only one group shot posted in which the coins are overlapping one another. It is too blurry to see any details beyond the coins simply being in the range of VG-XF condition. No time remains to ask the seller for clarification. I have three questions for you:

- Which date should sell for the highest price and what coin would you hope to get? What is your reasoning/data?

Thanks for offering your opinion on a rather unusual buying opportunity that actually did occur recently.

Hi Chris,

Ideally, yes, however the rules said no time remains! Actually this was tried on the auction in question, and the seller said "they all look the same!"

The answer is none - nothing spectacular enough there to warrant dealing with this seller's silliness. Without any inkling of which mints those dates were, it's not like you'd even be taking a flier on a known rare piece. Then again, maybe one has a boring life and instead just buys them all as a "grab bag", like you said, while nursing a 5th Bartles & Jaymes.

At any rate, they all sort of looked middle-of-the-roadish - none horrible, none amazing (betting that one closeup reverse was the nicest thing there) - and they went not far off where mid-grade common dates should pricewise ($13-$25):

Hi RealesWatcher,

You're probably right that it ultimately may be a disappointment for those who took the chance. For better or worse, ebay is often a game of odds as it is often difficult to determine the quality of coins from unknown sellers. Anyway, I'm still curious what coins people would hope to get and why. Of course the higher stakes version with 8 reales would be more interesting but also more prone to counterfeits.

In my many years on ebay, there have only been a few cases where I've been seriously hosed with many more long-odds bets paying off, at least by my own standards.
