I realize the '64 pennies have many varieties/errors, but the example shown below is completely different from all others I have managed to find. There are quite a few photos, so please be patient!

Obverse: the photos show some odd flare-ups on the lettering from 5:00 to 9:00, perhaps not a typical doubling; from 11:00 to 3:00 there is a distortion of the denticles an arc offset from the rim), and appears to be a semi-doubling. The denticles are clearly clipping the edge of the rim; the M.G. initials are distorted and appear to be doubled, in particular the G. The reason I mention doubling here, is that there are 2 dots after the G., one above & slightly offset to the right from the first (lower) dot. The bottom half of the G seems to be doubled and the character is incomplete. The close-up photo was taken through a 16X magnifier, and hopefully shows well.

Reverse: firstly, what a shame that the toning is so distracting but could be worse!; from the southwest to the northeast, the strike is slightly off-center with the tips of the denticles in the northeast quadrant clipping the edge of the rim. The denticles in the southwest seem to be normal.

I've looked at this coin too many times and I'm hoping that you may be able to help in determining exactly what happened. Thanks for having a look!

I think you can chalk up a number of those things to Die Deterioration. Also, did you notice the '4' of '1964', look at how poorly defined the edges of that number are, relative to the other digits? Also look at the stem of the leaf above the 4, it is quite thin. On the obverse, details are lost around the nose. I think overpolishing of the dies has occurred, to produce that effect. Lastly, your coin is moderately to weakly struck. The highest points of the leafs on the reverse look 'worn' (a fully struck coin has sharp points) and there is loss of detail on the highest points in the hair around the laurels on the obverse.

Keep searching the 1964 years, the dies got even worse in some cases...

Thanks SPP, the denticles near Regina are very weak, so you're probably right in mentioning the overall die quality was poor. The M.G. doubling effect can be attributed to Die Deterioration also? That was one of the highlights of this penny (thought I stumbled onto something extremely unusual)!
