I found this one recently... At first I thought damage, but there is no raised metal around these indents as would be expected, nor are there obvious grinding marks. Also, the rim is still partially formed in the indented are which I've seen with indent strikes but would seem unlikely if it was just PMD.

I'm thinking maybe it was struck through some foreign object?

The reverse is apparently unremarkable.

I love these odd coins.

I'm guessing, again, but I think it got stuck in a machined and every coin that passed by gouged it a little bit until it ended up looking as it does.

But, again, I will wait to see what the experts say.

If the weight of the coin is normal, then you've got a rather unusual pair of struck-through errors. I'm hedging my bets right now because the indentation on the left is peculiarly flat with no clear border on the medial side. A coin like this would have to be inspected closely to determine the nature and origin of the imperfections.

Weigh it! Duh! Why didn't I think of that? That would be my own advice if I saw somebody else post this coin. It's 0.10 grams underweight, so I guess it's just damage.

A tenth of a gram isn't much of a weight reduction and still leaves the coin within the normal range of variation for nickels. So it's still a 50/50 proposition in my opinion.

Surely the reverse would have shown some damage if the indent was made outside the press.
