Stewart, I love coins like this. Just thinking about where this coin has been and all the hands it has passed through since 1876.... 135 Years. That is awesome. Great Save, that coin deserves it!
Due to the pouristy of the surfaces it appears to have been underground for some time but lost soon after issue.
Not to detract from the history of the coin, but based on the amount (or lack of) wear I would guess it would have been lost or buried underground circa 1890.
