This coin has a diangle mark in the exergue next to the first letter of the MM. At first I thought it might part of the MM but I haven't found a listing for it. So it's probably a mistake on the die or the results of a die crack. What do you think? CONSTANS PF AVG: VICTORIAE DD AVGGQNN; SMTSE, Ric VIII Thessalonica 101. C2
MM as in mint mark. Yes I see what you are talking about, but I can not begin to guess what it is. Is it raised like it was part of the strike? It could be damage.
I cannot make it out for sure, but it looks like it may be part of a letter such as "A" or "delta", but I haven't been able to find a mintmark for Thessalonica that resembles it.
OK, I'm stumped. Either it is a random mark or it's something I have been unable to find any reference to. A good place to look is HELVETICA'S IDENTIFICATION HELP PAGE and at the pull down menu select the two victories with wreath. Take a look, but I saw nothing. Sorry my friend.
I'm thinking it's just a random mark. Can't really see a mintmark being that long, other than fully spelled out ones (like my Augustus Julia Traducta).
No your not JW. I've checked Helvetica and other sources and there is no such mark. So it's more likely a random mark or the results from a die crack. It would be interesting to find more coins with this mark.
