First, this is a nice genuine coin IMHO. Second, one of the ways to at least get a little bit of an idea is the weight and measurement. If it's within the "tolerance", then that's one less thing to make one suspicious. Do you see any signs of casting, i.e. casting bubbles, casting seam along the edge, etc. If not then you probably have a good genuine coin. Next, if you still have doubts, check the fake reports to see if your coin is a die match to a listed fake. Try http://www.forgerynetwoek.com and http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/index.phpBoth are excellent. Last, if you still are unsure, post the images here with all the appropriate information. Someone here will be able to help. But I will say that its next to impossible to say with 100% certainty without having the coin in hand. JW |

Thanks JW I feel much better with you saying you think it might be a real coin, I have looked at this coin from all angles and dont see any seams or bubbles. What made me think it might be a fake is because I cant seem to find any that are this nice that arent silver. thats the reason I just wanted to get it checked by you ancient gurus here. Thanks for looking I have to bring back my calipers tomorrow. I dont have a scale anymore but should be getting one soon. I am starting over, I got rid-of or sold most of my things moving back to the midwest. thanks again I appreciate your inputs.

Well I'm kinda new to this but I have learned that if it is an 8 Reales Spanish Colonial coin it is probably a fake. Yeah - I know that doesn't help.  |

Gil-galad- Because Chinese counterfeiters have greatly targeted them over the past 15 years or so. And what is scary is that they have become VERY good at crafting fakes. Sometimes every detail of the physical appearance will be prefect, but the weight or specific gravity might be slightly off. I love 8 Reales, but they are a dangerous game to play.

Now that you mention it, that sounds like fairly good advice. Because there is one particular coin that I really like and was thinking about getting one eventually. But now that you mention it, I might not if there is a high percentage of getting ripped off. This particular one is my favorite and the one I had in mind.  |
