I really like this coin (1866 3CS NGC/CAC PF65) that I purchased from Mark Feld. It has a lot of flash which is not readily apparent in these images. In hand the coin is truly a tiny gem. I admit that these close ups almost give the coin a darker, less appealing tone than when you see it in hand. The one thing that you'll notice in my pictures and in hand is that there's a stark contrast between the devices and fields, like a black and white effect. Do you think the coin is actually cameo'd underneath that toning? Here are my images: Here's Mark's original image: Edited by Prethen 10/25/2011 09:42 am

I like the colors, but a proof is well out of my range, nice coin!

Unfortunately, the business strike is not only out of my range but virtually impossible to find!

That is indeed a nice coin. I've always liked the 2 and 3 cent pieces, including the 3 cent nickel variety.

Judging from your images, I don't think there's any doubt the coin is CAM under the toning. The fields are trying very hard to be bright, while the devices just want to disappear. The inside "fields" of the star tell the story. CAM washes out easily under lighting designed to best bring out detail, as Mark's (really, really good) images point out.
Yeah, this is a Gem, all right. Wonderful coin.

Mark doesn't believe this would ever get into an NGC CAM holder. Of course, I'll never find out for sure if there's full cameo under the toning, but the obverse has the look that it would be almost fully cameo (maybe not corner of star? not sure) and the "III" on the reverse might not be cameo'd but it could just be the way it toned.

Yeah, that's the trouble. With the toning in place, there's no way they'd stretch their necks out to call it CAM. Then again, even if it is, it technically isn't because the characteristics aren't easily visible.

Beautiful coin! This must have been a pleasant surprise to get this one in hand based on the seller's original pictures.
