(please scroll down to the last paragraph of my post to skip the whole story and get straight to the question, if you want)about a month or 2 ago I decided to change the way I store my old copper pennies (most of them from the 30's, 40's, and 50's). so I went to my local coin store and saw a plastic sheet for storing coins, so I went ahead and bought it. each sheet could fit roughly around 40-50 coins, so I thought it would be good for storing large quantities of coins that don't have very much value. when I got home I was disappointed to learn that the sheets didn't do an awful good job for storing coins because there were no dividers dividing each section for a coin so the coins kept moving and getting jumbled and scratched about. I came to the conclusion that I would have to fix the problem my self. so I decided to make my own sections using a heat impulse sealer. each coin would be placed in it's spot then I would seal it in, creating a spot where the coin could not move and air could not circulate because of the seal.

just today I noticed a lot of little black spots on the surface of the coins (most likely because of the way I sealed them or from the plastic) and now I might have to get all the coins out and find a new method of storing them which brings me to my question- how can I store a lot of old copper coins in a cheap affective way while not destroying the value of the coin. I am thinking of buying coin tubes for the pennies. (and yes I am aware of 2 by 2's, slabs, and airtight containers but I rather not use them for a large quantity of pennies)anyways sorry for the extremely long story, main point being, how would you store a lot of copper coins and what would you suggest I do?

I roll them and put them in a cent box. Once I get $25.00 worth I seal the box and start another. It's cheap, easy and effective.

I fill old peanut butter jars with cents and then put in a few silica packs to keep moisture to a minimum and then just seal them up nice and tight.

I don't hoard coins for just the metal so not sure what I would do. Possibly just melt them into a block of Copper and then no problem. Or bury them in a liquid plastic material. Or if I wanted to spend a lot of money, then it's those plastic tubes for them. Or just sell them all and forget about storing, protecting, hoarding, etc.

I don't think he's hoarding- seems like he just has a lot of old pennies in his collection. Note that he says he wants them not to bump each other and scratch each other...

yea I'm not exactly hoarding them for their copper content, I'm pretty young so if I keep coins from the 30's to 50's by the time I'm around 40-50 they be 100 years old, and even now its not to often to see one from these years. although the pennies are a small part of my collection I still try and preserve them

OK since you are young and a collector, for now just put them in those plastic rolls until you start using Albums. Or just try to get some Albums now for those. The main thing is regardless of how you store them, try not to put them in a bag, box, can, etc where they will scrath each other.
