There must be a reason behind why these coins were struck in this manner, but there is no known records stating the reasons. One reason could be that it was much more difficult to produce these coins than the normal flat coin, which would make it harder to counterfeit. The coins where struck from concave and convex dies. The where double struck from the side and not center struck. One side being struck then the die lifted and move to the other side and than struck again.
