I have also found a 1981 5 cent that weighs 2.77grams. Compared to the normal weight which is 2.83 grams. Although it is worn it still has almost all of it's detail. Does anyone know how this coin might have gotten under weight?

Maybe a different planchet, like from another country

I note that the date is 1981. I am not a specialist on Australian decimals, therefore I have a question: Did the R.A.M. contract out any of the 1981 5 cent production to a non Auasralian mint, e.g. The Royal Mint, or the Royal Canadian Mint? If the answer is 'yes', especially if it is The Royal Mint, it is highly probable that a blank from another country could have got mixed up in the order for the Australian coins.

RAM site says 5c was made at RAM, RCM, RMLL in 1981. How did you notice the difference in weight?

The 1981 coin was minted in Wales or Canada but neither carry mint marks in order to tell the difference. They both are listed as weighing 2.83 grams. So yes sel_691 - it is entirely possible that the wrong planchet was used. Thanks for the clue Australiancoin.

Australiancoin - you're on to something there I reckon! I will be a special eye out for these 1981 coins now! ozcoins - I could feel the difference as soon as I picked it up (I was sorting a $40 bag of 5's at the time). It felt thinner, and lighter. It also appears thinner.

I don't know what the UK coins weigh, but I did just compare the sizes of all my UK coins to this 5c I have and none of them matched up. I will now compare with my Canadian coins NO go.
