Hi everyone. I picked up a my first Walking Liberty half dollar today. It's a 1943. I got it from a local dealer for $16. It has some oxidation from being kept in a folder. The dealer offered to give it an acetone bath, but I'm not sure if I should. It has some vertical lines on the reverse of the coin. Take a look at the photo's and let me know what you think. Also, I'm trying to figure out how to grade coins, and my guess for this one would be an AU 55. How accurate is that?

I don't see an AU, I think it could be at best VF. Sorry if I'm wrong but this is what is see with these photos. I recommend you take that acetone wash and maybe it might look better, best I would've taken is melt. No offense...

The acetone bath will only help if there is gunk on it. Any tarnish spots will remain. That being said, an acetone bath done by someone that knows what they are doing certainly won't hurt your coin, and if it helps so much the better.

Is that a fingerprint mark on the obverse in the field near the T and Y of Liberty?

I think so. The guy I bought it from told me he got it in a folder as part of an incomplete set, which is also where the lines on the reverse came from. I'll probably go back on Monday to see if the acetone will get rid of some of the blemishes. Even if it doesn't get any better, it's not that expensive of a coin, and it'll still be 90% silver.

The second photos are better, the first ones made me think it was all worn. The obverse is either too dirty or is a weak strike. Good luck!
