I was at the local coin shop and a woman came in with some coins. The owner offered her $600 for a $20 gold piece and $100 for a 1/4 gold piece. I couldn't help but to have a nice stern talk with her once she left the shop...

No, she needed to check the value of them for her uncles estate. I talked to her when she left and gave her my name and number. She asked for it and seemed eager to sell them. She agreed with my thoughts and said the guy was a grouch and not very polite. I don't think I can affort the $20 gold piece. But I think she will sell me the small gold coin and the currency. I'm excited... lol

We need more info to know If the dealer low balled the offer ,, what type coins , date mint ?

Coin shops buy wholesale and sell retail thats how they keep the doors open.

Rick,
Yes, they do need to keep the door open. However, I think you would just need to see the shop to know what I mean. I was trying to look around and he has so much stuff in the way you can't even get through the whole store. I had to move stacks of comic books just to look at his currency. I had to kneel down just to look at his Mercury dimes. You ask if he has something and he just sais yes. He doesn't get it for you, he doesn't give you a price, heck he wont even give you the grade. He wanted 50 cents a piece for currency holders. I mean, this guys a jerk... Hes got some AWESOME coins, but his customer service department is lacking the perfection he needs to do business.

well all I can say is it takes all types,, I have seen absolutely orginised clean coin shops and then I ve seen them like the one you described.

I have bought coins from both types and a few in between. What is important is the honesty of the dealer.

we still need to know what the coins were before we can make any type of judgement about the offer .

Sounds like he was giving her bullion price or less. I agree with Metalman that we need more info on the coins for final judgement.

I'm so glad that my favorite coin shop is organized, knowledgeable and most importantly honest. I've found some good deals in the messy shops on occasion but, the reverse being that they low-ball for lack of knowledge and caring about the collectors. Unfortunately, it's the folks who don't know what they have that are prey to unscrupulous dealers, etc.
