I just started up my old-but-pristine, White's Eagle Spectrum this past week. Although I obtained the original manual with it, I went ahead and downloaded the .pdf from the web.

Man, there are so many fine tuning abilities one can do. Also, the sound is very distinctive that you are looking for. Now I understand why someone told me to start in my own yard.

In short, I need to get the feel of the machine and learn it's ins and outs before actually going somewhere and seriously looking for treasure.

This looks like the beginning of a really nice hobby.

That's right it's the best thing to do,and not only with your machine this is also good for any metal detector the very first thing is to learn the machine you have.

Once I get a metal detector, I'm going to be doing my own yard first.

You should bring out some test pieces so you can learn the different sounds it will make. Air tests are kinda useless. I put a dime on the ground and listen to the sound while raising the coil after each pass. When I loss the signal that's about the max on how far down I can expect to find that target. I try this with other coins and even some jewelry. Not sure about the eagle spectrum, but my detector has different tones for different targets. Helps you to learn which targets to dig and which ones are junk. Starting out though you will dig a lot of junk. Don't get discouraged, just think of it as a learning experience. Good luck hunting!

I have been thinking of getting my old White detector that I bought in the late 60's now that my coin collecting interest has been revived.

Ken, I've pulled over a hundred coins out of my yard. (The house is near downtown, on a corner, built in 1917 - all keys to old coins).
