SO I've been using my MD for a few days now and I've been trying to figure out why sometimes it beeps and then I run it back over the same spot and nothing happens. I discriminated iron but when I really do find something it does beep repeatedly. Also, does lightning affect the signal?
And how close can another MD be without causing interference?
Thanks dudes
Rest in Peace

There are lots of reasons you can get intermittent signals. Detector type, ground mineralization, swing speed, discrimination, signal masking, etc. More than likely, its a combination of some of the above. The old answer: "When in doubt, dig it." And large iron could be a culprit, too. The iron can be so large the discrimination just can't knock it all out.

Not sure about lightning. Electrical interference can cause problems to some machines.

As far as other detectors nearby, if they are running different frequencies, they can get rather close.

Yes lightning will cause interference with your detector,I use a Minelab GP5000 these will pick up lightning over a 100 miles away, you could be swing low and slow get a signal swing back over the same spot with out a sound.
As with other detectors in the area you are working even with a different frequency they will still cause an undulating interference with your detector the closer you are to them.
I hope this helps

JamieH is spot on........many reasons this could happen, and it even happens sometimes with my new detector. One thing I found out too is that when you get a new detector the best thing is always to dig almost everything for awhile til you get a good idea of where it signals for certain items.

If I heard lightning in my detector, I'd hightail it out of there! You hear about golfers getting struck because their golf clubs become lightning rods - same with your metal detector!
