It seems the more I visit my local dealer, the better the deals. Scored this purty 1883-CC Morgan yesterday for $180.00.....I think I did okay. I was gonna grade her around MS-60 to MS-62........... what say you ? She's already resting comfortably in the DANSCO inside my safe. I LOVE this coin ! Edited by CitizenPatriot 11/01/2011 10:05 pm

Ms 63 due to the rim dings on the obverse. The coin has very clean fields. Nice coin!

I wouldn't be so sure on the grade; photos make it look cleaned or dipped, but can't say for sure.
If its really that mark free, I'd say its better than MS-63, there don't look to be any marks that would really limit the grade to lower MS, save for those rim hits which look like they'd be almost invisible on a large coin. Depends on the luster for these, too.

Agree might just be the lighting or heavy mint frost but this coin does not look right luster seems too flat for the apparent grade.

I hope the coins true color is not what appears in the pictures. If so, something is really wrong with it.
If the coin is truly lustrous and problem-free (the rim hit doesn't look that bad), it looks near Gem+ to me. Since the coin was bought sight-seen, I'm guessing that the price was a retail price for what was received.

One thing to watch out for is a "smoked" AU coin. That occurs when a dealer blows fine particulate smoke over the surface of the coin to cover up surface issues.
The look of a smoked coin is similar to the photograph but, of course, mint frost can also look that way under certain lighting conditions.

Very different looking. Lighting.?.? Possible cleaning/dipping. My suggestion is AU55-58..

NO... he is having photo troubles, he has not yet got the lighting correctly, which directly effects the coins overall condition...and evaluation....I have view his other posts in which he has the same problem, it's not the coin...

I bought my 1883-CC GSA for less than 200 bucks in MS-63 by NGC so even though I don't believe you scored on the price, I think you did alright. I have to say I bought mine when silver was about11 dollars an ounce and haven't really looked for any since then so the prices may have went up some since then, but I know the price of silver really hasn't effected the price of other Morgans in MS-62-MS-64 to much so really figure it wouldn't effect a common date like the 83-CC in these grades either

Correct, sir. I took the same RAW digital photo and processed it using my "custom grayscale" method to achieve a slightly different look, which may (or may not) add to the discussion at hand. While this photo may not accurately reflect the coin's luster, it lends a slightly different perspective.
As for the coin itself, I don't believe it has been cleaned or altered in any way, but I couldn't swear to it. I DO trust my local dealer's reputation and his eye for coins, as he has steered me away from cleaned coins in the past when I was just beginning to collect. And it would not be in his best interest to do so. I have become a regular visitor to his store.
I will generally select two or three Morgans that interest me and set them aside for further scrutiny. After that, I will ask his opinion of each before making a final decision to see if his opinions dovetail with my own. In this instance, there was a similar 1883 CC that was much more "frosty" with some toning around the rim of the obverse, but it also had a black mark on the reverse about the size of a pin-head that detracted from the overall eye appeal. The coin I selected wasn't quite as frosty, but had fewer detracting marks. It was a trade-off.
Here's another view of the same coin for purposes of discussion. That said, I'm going to have to research more and adjust my lighting methods to better suit the subject matter. I thought photographing speeding jets at an air show was challenging......until I tried this :)
