I'm not suggesting this is a mint-made variety; however I am not sure. Since I surprisingly read it is supposed to have a smooth edge, I took some pics to share. This was purchased off ebay in very nice condition (didn't photograde but its at least Fine, maybe VF). Most of LIBERTY on the shield is visible with the right angle. It does have a few gashes in it , but I think it adds to its old, special look; as it happened so long ago it looks natural. As for the rim, not sure what to make of it.

Perhaps someone did this to pass it off as a 25 cent piece? Imagine, someone 130+ years ago, hacking up the rim just to make 5 cents.. possible.

It is so hard to find pics of the rims of coins when purchasing or browsing online... even PCGS doesn't have them. When I start selling some of my collection on ebay, I'm going to use a scanner, magnifying glass + camera, and take pics of rims when appropriate, like here.

The weight of the coin is 4.893g ; supposed to be 5.0+/- 0.1 so it is in the low range, but even the 2 small gashes could account for that; might not be much off the rim, they seem shallow.

I can assure you it's PMD.
5 cents back then could buy much more than today so yes, probably tried to pass as a quarter.
