I take it that you did not see the cleaning marks on the ebay listing? I just looked up your date/mm on numismedia.com I can't see your images "red x's", but I doubt that it is higher than XF40, not for a $280 winning bid. If you are happy...that is what matters! Morgan dollars - 1879 CC FMV Prices (Good-XF40) G4 $121 VG8 144 F12 192 VF20 306 XF40 720 I appreciate you listing them under imageshack, but that site is BLOCKED (Access Denied) from work. Figures. I'll take a look at the house.

I saw a little bit of the marks but the photos were not that great. I think the coin has nice eye appeal so I'm happy for the price. I added two links if the images were not showing up.

I'd be returning that one .... but not for the jackhammer marks around the motto. The coin's got PVC damage on the high points of both the obverse and the reverse. That would be just too much money for me ... given that eventually, were I to decide to sell, knowing going in, that I'd have to get somebody else to "sign off" on the coin at that price level or lose my shirt.

Not a bad looking coin 1879-CC's are never the prettiest tend to be weakly struck and usually circulated ones have been banged around alot.
I think you paid a fair market price given the condition I'd hold onto it. Not seeing any PVC usually that is some ugly green gunk...

The PVC has been removed, leaving the etching behind. The cheek, neck, lower edge of the bonnet ... all show etched surfaces. I just cleaned that crap from 27 dollars face value of US silver. I know what is left behind after the green's melted away.
This is an issue that escalates quickly by grade, so you might be OK. I didn't know this was one that was a bit tougher in higher grades, so take what I've said with a grain of salt. There are some out ther priced higher than this one that are worse.

For grade on this one, I'll say VF-35 details perhaps VF-30 net given some of the surface issues.

If you are happy... Personally I would not want to pay more than a couple C-notes for that coin

Return it. It has numerous issues and is worth half what you paid.

I can see it's been polished, and I'm looking at it on my cellphone.

The imaged coin from Teletrade is a far better example and doesn't look harshly cleaned to me. It went high too (for problem-free VF30 money). The OPs coin is harshly cleaned, polished, damaged, and basically destroyed from a numismatic perspective. He should return it. Here's a nice VF25 example (that looks 30 to me) that went for $276. http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...e=PCGS131111

I guess it all depends on whether someone is willing to overlook the polishing to get an otherwise pretty nice grade 79-CC.
If it were an 1893-S, people would be cutting in line for a chance to bid on it...

Would it be worth it to ask the seller for a partial refund or should I just return it? I like the coin but it does have quite a few technical problems...
VF-35 details is an accurate grade or XF-details?

1879-CC is a tuff bird.....lower grades are still expensive and the higher the grade is the price...lower grades will have there problems, and higher grades are very expensive... any 79-cc lower graded coin is a hard coin to find at a good price........with no problems...the fact is most of the low grades have some problems...Its a hard coin to find, within ones budget....My thoughts are, the 79-cc is harder to find until you reach the 1893 and above series,,the rest are easily found, even for a price..., then once again they are scarce......problems or not...it can get rediculous in the 1893's and above.. to fill the holes in our albums....

This example also has far more detail in the hair, wings than many of the lower grade "hockey puck" type examples that sell for top dollar. We also tend to weigh the obverse more strongly and, for this coin, the really bad marks are all on the reverse. Obverse is admittedly a bit too shiny so yes this is a cleaned example but I have seen key dates with a huge number of criss-crossing parallel lines (not evident on this example) still sell for good money. This coin is not nearly as bad as some of the posts would indicate.
