Purchased this for a couple bucks as owning something with so much history behind it is pretty amazing. I think I might start up a collection of older Roman coins as I learn more.. anyways though, if any of you could help me identify this particular one it would be greatly appreciated!

To fully attribute this coin you will have to post a picture of both obverse and reverse. I'm sure we can attribute it with little difficulty. At first glance I'm thinking its an Arcadius. By the way, welcome to the forum and to Ancient coin collecting. You may find that this is a very fascinating and rewarding hobby. Again, Regards, JW

I agree with JW's Arcadius. The reverse photo is upside down showing VOT V in a wreath. The mintmark was at the bottom (your top) but the flan was too small to include it so full ID is not possible.

Doug's right. Without the mintmark it will be impossible to fully attribute this coin. However, if this is an Arcadius, and I believe it is, it is an AE4 struck circa 383-384, and I would attribute the following:
OBV: D N ARCADIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust, right REV: VOT V within wreath
The mints I know that struck coins like this are Antioch, Constantinople, Cyzicus, Heraclea. Nicomedia, and Siscia.
Your next question might be how rare and how much is it worth. It is not rare and, in fact, quite common. Value is hard to assign to any coin, but I would set this coin's value at under $1-$2 U.S. I know that sounds terrible, but I bought a similar Arcadius, only VOT XX and fully attributable, in March of this year for 16 cents.
I hope we have answered your questions. I would invite you to stick around. Perhaps you will learn a few things and catch the fever to collect these historical pieces of art.
Regards,
JW

Thank you all very much for the responses. I think I already have started to catch that fever - I'll be researching as much as I can!

I'm terribly sorry you've caught the fever.
BTW, Welcome to the ancient forum.
PS If you crop your photos pretty close around the coin before you post they'll show off better.

Thanks Doucet! I did crop them quite a bit, however I suppose a little bit more wouldn't hurt.
