Hi all

I recently got this coin for the griffin on it.

I really like the coin, but it has a coating of some kind on it, and it makes it feel a little like plastic.
Is anyone familiar with this.

I've heard mention of painting a coin to protect it from bronze disease. Do you know what is used for this? The coating is quite tough and seems to be transparent, with a brown tinting.

Is this something that was done more in the past or is it still common today?

I'm a little disappointed because I'm such a fan of natural patina. I like the coin but I don't know if I should send it back.

Your comments would be appreciated.

Its a shame as its a beautiful coin. A lot of coins are repatinated these days but its something that has gone on for a long, long time. Sometimes its justified, if a coin has had terrible bronze disease perhaps the only way of conserving it is under a thick artificial patina.

I'm still not sure about it, some of the modern techniques are very good but I think I would still prefer the coin to just be left to tone and darken naturally, even if it did take years. Even better still the original patina was just left on! I understand some coins would never clean unless acid or electricity were used but sometimes get the feeling they are just treated on a mass scale rather than just the ones that need it.

I have some of the older repatinated coins that are awful, it literally looks like they have been coated in wood varnish - not nice. Only you can decide to keep this or not, it annoys me when sellers dont point these things out in listings. If your always going to have a bad feeling when looking at this coin I would send it back, keep your cash for one that will always make you smile when you look at it.

I sprayed a 1964 Kennedy half in 1964, with clear acrylic lacquer. It is in exactly the same condition now as on the day that I sprayed it.
Acrylic lacquer is easily purchased in spray cans. It is the recommended treatment for the anodised alloy trim on my 30 year old classic Mercedes.

I just have not got enough nerve to treat an ancient coin in this way.

Perhaps I am right, perhaps I am not.
Perhaps what what I REALLY should do, is ask a curator in the Coins and Medals Department of the British Museum.

Maybe a 'Net search could help answer this question.
At least, (I think), that the lacquer could be removed with acetone.

So far as this coin is concerned, I think that the particular mode of patination is a product of the environment it has been in. Maybe a different environment would have produced a different patination color. If you think that there is some kind of plastic on it, an acetone soaking MAY help to ameliorate the brown color. I don't think that harm would be done to it.

However, if it WAS changed, you may not be able to return it. Sometimes, in life, risks have to be taken. The choice is yours, but ask for more opinions first.

I wrote the seller about this coin, he was good about it and gave me half the cost as a refund.

I kept the coin and decided to explore the possibilty of restoring it.

Just as I suspected the coating on it was a brown varnish or paint.

Here is a picture of the obverse about with the paint about half way removed. The picture was taken with a flash and brings out the gruesome details.

Here it is after all the paint has been removed. It appears someone over-cleaned the coin and then used the brown varnish to re-patina it.
There is more detail on it than I had thought. I only found a couple for sale at this time on the web, not nearly in this nice of condition.......except for the patina of course.

Now the question is should I attempt a new patina?

Why rush? Time and exposure to pollutants in the air will tone the coin in time just like it does the pennies in your pocket change. Don't seal the coin away in plastic but sit it in a bright south facing window where it can keep warm and see if it looks better this time next year. It is an ancient coin. It is in no hurry.

It already looks better than it did with the paint.

That really does look like paint, rather than lacquer or varnish.

Given that the British Museum invented Ren Wax for preserving their ancient metal artefacts and all the BM's coins ancient through to modern are treated with it, they'd probably recommend waxing it.

It looks like a horrible attempt to put another patina on it. I hope I dont offend anybody by posting some of the pics lately. maybe I should only post finished coins instead of the process I have put some of my coins through. I think I should just put more money down on better coins. Sellers should always note this when they sell.

I really have no problem waxing it, and I have some Ren Wax. But I would like it to have some more character before, and not look so naked.
