Three grand is very cheap for the 1916 LSQ with a strong date IMO. It has the scratches but the back of the coin is really fine and that date is a big deal to me. I have seem those coins with much weaker dates being graded as VF on ebay. You could probably make a decent profit on it just as it is. I have a set of LSQ's and I lack the 1916 because I did not want to spend $7000 just to get a coin with a decent date. Are you trying to fill a set of LSQ's? Next challenge is 1923-S and 1921 and then all the coins before 1925. You were at the right place at the right time. |

I've decided to focus on this series for the moment but I am still relatively new to this level of the hobby. I've always loved the LSQ's, even as a child so having one of the keys and that love is pushing me in that direction. I've been metal detecting since the eighties and have a large assortment of silver coins as a result but I've only ever found one "no date" Stander. Having my buddy find this one, was and is quite a shock.
I recently purchased a 1st series, 1917 D at a local show that grades at what I think is AU quality. I intend to have it graded and slabbed eventually and thought that might be the grade I would shoot for overall... Then I followed a link to the Heritage Auctions site from another member. Holy Buckets! Way over my head pricewise at that grade so maybe Fine is a more realistic level for me? Time will tell.

Oh, I forgot to mention that my friend had a best offer of $3000.00 for the coin and I agreed to match that price. While we were waiting for the coin to return, the other buyer up'd the offer to $3800.00 but my fried kept his word and declined. I can't say enough good things about this fellow, just an incredible human being that I've been blessed to know and love. When you consider that only 52,000 1916 LSQ's were minted and that the dates are so vulnerable to being destroyed I wonder just how many of them still exist? I am going to buy one and if I can get it in true Fine condition I would be happy. Often Fine for the 1916 means something different it seems. If you can even read the date it is a big deal. Any details and it is outstanding.

If you could hold onto the coin for at least 5-10 years buying one in MS condition might be profitable. Selling is a problem to me since unless you have retail outlet you sell to a dealer and he wants to give you maybe 50%-75% of the coins value. There goes your profit.
