I don't think its only ebay. On another site with auctions, many 1 oz bars of silver have been selling between $44 and $58 for the last few days

You know, its actually really funny you brought this up. I, too, thought to myself earlier that there was some crazy bidding going on.
Between my two accounts I lost all 5 auctions I bid on. They were all serious bids too. All 5 went through the roof. I wasn't even close to winning. The usual of 6 bidders fighting in the last 4 seconds. I think all 5 went over retail value of the item(s).

Not sure why this is happening but I have a couple guesses of what might contribute to it. We are starting to get close to Christmas so people may be starting to buy for gifts and don't mind overpaying as much (or don't know that they are). Also, gold and silver is back on the rise so people might be jumping on the bandwagon once again. Though paying $58/oz is pretty crazy. Silver will need to go over $60 an ounce before you would get your money back on it, and I don't think silver will go that high.

I kind of noticed too. It was my first time on ebay after losing power and internet for 5+ days and a full day of chainsawing fallen trees. Maybe people in the northeast were just jonesing for their ebay fix after a few days cold turkey, I dunno.

It may be fear of the European Debt crisis that is driving the bids. Especially the Greek scenario playing out right now.

I've been on ebay, too, and have noticed people over-bidding on the Morgan dollars. I always look up the value (NCG & PCGS) when they have the serial number and can't believe how much they are paying. There was one 1879-cc that I should have bought (buy it now) valued by PCGS for $218 and it sold for $145.

Is the economy playing a role in all the overbidding, or are people late to the party upping all the bids? They see and hear people are making some extra cash investing in silver so they figure, hey why not me. Even if they have to overpay a little atleast they feel they are invested. I mostly see the overbidding in melt value items.

Regarding the Morgans: Several Philadelphia radio stations have been airing an ad for "recently discovered" Morgans which listeners can buy directly from company xyz. The ad suggests you can hold history in your hand and that this is a rare opportunity. I'm thinking, call your local coin store, dummies. This is another con. Perhaps the ads, if played elsewhere, have spurred people to check out ebay where the prices are lower - compared to those of these radio salespeople.
