Not sure if I missed the discussion on the 1/10oz gold dragon that the RCM will be shipping come the new year. 1/10oz-Gold-Dragon

Although the $15 silver dragons were dumped on by so many because the RCM decided to dump a lot of the coins on us, one of the forum members here made a valid comparison between these dragon coins and Perth Mint's bullion offers. Using limited issue bullion coins as a rule, RCM's 1/10oz gold dragon seem like very good buys to me.

The reverse proof IMO is well executed and the dragon design itself quite unique given the plethora of dragon coins out there, the mintage is not all too bad either by bullion standards, and the price is actually pretty good. I mean, you can't expect the mint to issue a non-standard gold coin and not charge a bit extra for it.

Using $1750-$1800/oz as spot gold, these 1/10oz dragons come with a ~30% premium. Regular ol' 1/10oz gold maples can't be bought for lower than ~20% in premium new, and that's before shipping if you buy online. So, these dragons are really only 10% in premium over comparable gold maples, which is less than $20 at today's prices.

It will be neat to see if RCM will jack up the price should spot gold rise before the coins sell out. There's still a good month and a half before the coin even ships. If gold moves above $1900 again the 1/10oz dragons will cost less than a 1/10oz maple.

Best bang for your buck, I'd say the dragon is the winner. The nearly 40K mintage doesn't bother me at all.

I bought one without hesitation, comparing to 1/10 maple leaf mintage http://www.jandm.com/script/getitem...CID=7&PID=33 40k is still low, and it has box and COA. I will keep an eye on gold price, once above 1900, these dragons become bargains. of course, if price go south, I will go with 1 oz GML. my rule is this if price go down, buy bullion, price go up, buy numis or limited

I need some opinion please. Does anybody here think this 1/10 oz gold dragon might sell out by the end of the year? I will order one, but want to delay it until December because my available funds are shinking. I need those available funds in case of something unexpected like my car breaking down.

RCM only charge your CC before shipping, and the shipping date of this card is Jan, 2012.

go for it i'd say. Shipping date as SilverBug said is not until next year, and even then it might be delayed pending the popularity of coin. If it sells out I almost can guarantee you won't be able to find it for the same price on the secondary market

When I ordered the twoonies using my CIBC VISA, my available funds went down by $50 because the total was $50. But yeah, my online statement doesn't show the charge.
There was speculation that the Chinese bought alot of the Perth Mint silver dragons so who knows what might happen to these 1/10 oz dragons?

@ Mrpiedfort, don't worry about that. The funds were reserved on your credit card by an automated system. As there won't be a charge for a long while (for the dragon), the reservation will expire in about a week.

What do you mean by the "reservation will expire in about a week"?

I think what happens is that the RCM (or any store for that matter) gets an authorization on the credit card first (the reservation we're talking about), which is basically checking to see if there's enough credit on the card for the purchase. If there is, the credit is held but the card not charged until the seller puts the final charge call in. Normally, the authorization and charge follow one another closely, but when it comes to phone or internet orders, they can be separated by a few days. In that case, if more than a week as passed with not actual charge, the authorization on the card expires and the held credit released.

After hemming and hawing about this coin, I finally decided to pre-order it. I have been looking to get my first gold coin for a while now and since I like dragons, it was a no brainer. Although I am cheap, I was willing to pay the $230 for the Dragon instead of $210 for a Maple Leaf 1/10 Oz.

BTW, I got free shipping with the promo code "heritage".
