I made the rounds to the local cash-for-gold store fronts and scored two proof sets. A 1963 and a 1957 for $21 a piece. The reason I picked these up were they both had blast white ultra-cameo dimes in them. The problem with the two coins is that even though the obverse is obviously Ultra Cameo or Deep Cameo the reverses are either brilliant or only softly cameo. I know this is typical of the era as they didn't rotate dies at the same time. My question is, do these sets have a higher value than your run of the mill set? I'm hoping to maybe sell one and pay for both.

Any insights would be helpful. Thanks!

I have never seen a cameo set prior to 1968, individual coins yes but not a set. As far as a resell your only chance to get close to paying for the other one is to sell the coins separately, then you may get a premium for a cameo coin.

Muddler- is it a cameo though, if only one side is frosted. Like I said, these things are blast white on the obverse. They look like a modern proof... the back wouldn't pass a TPG as cameo.

I'm sure one coin of the set would be a cameo I just have never seen a full set as cameo. It is also quit common for only one side to be cameo. None of my proof sets have any cameo from 64 back to 58 but I have a few graded Franklin's that are cool.

1957 NGC pf 66 cam

I think both sides have to be at least cameo to get that designation though both sides may have different levels of cameo. They should get some premium over non cameo coins but I am not sure how much.

TPG's only designate "cam" if both sides are. Sometimes NGC will give a star and no cam when it is only on one side.

I broke the sets apart and I'll post some photos tonight. What you see before you open the plastic is misleading. I thought the 63 was weaker- but it looks like the 57 has a nice solid cameo obverse and a brilliant reverse.. but the 63 is a full blown ultra cameo front and back. it's black and white- no visible scratches or blemishes. I'll look tonight through the magnifying glass- it's got to be a 67 or 68. So off to PCGS it'll go!

Stoked!
