I just received a lot of uncleaned coins that were said to have come from Britain. This one has not yet been cleaned, but it is very striking since the bust looks a bit crude (and maybe double struck), but the edge lettering that is visible is very odd. In fact, some letters seem to just be squiggles. Is this a case of double strike distortion or might it be a barbarous copy? (And please pardon the poor scan- the relief of the bust does not allow a good view of the legend.

Very likely - we'll need some post cleaning picks to confirm but I think your correct.

The legend looks odd and also the proportions of the bust look strange. If it is a barb its unlikely the cutter could read or write so he would have just attempted to copy the legend from a real coin as well as he could. Its always nice to get something a bit different in an uncleaned lot
