I went to get some 5c coins yesterday and the teller asked if I was interested in getting some $1 notes.
He said that he had just found them and gave me 10 $1 notes. They are mostly very good condition and 2 were consecutive serial numbers!

I have some friendly tellers that will do that for me.
One is called wife" and other is called "daughter-in-law".

Rather convenient really. I love it when someone cashes in a $200 gold coin over the counter (some actually do that -possibly stolen?) and I get the tip-off to buy it back at face value.

Hi Jeff,
How often has something like that happened?

Cashing in $200 gold coins is not often; maybe once a year. I have even had one still in the original mint packaging.

Paper notes is more frequent. Amazing how many of these are almost uncirculated and consecutive numbers! I assume people collected their pay in cash (straight from a bank to the pay office) and put the notes in a pile in a drawer, then took notes from the top to spend. Lower notes may have been undisturbed for years.

Also, foreign coins often turn up in change. Sometimes excellent and sometimes well worn. Very occasionally a genuine silver coin makes it well worth paying whatever value they were passed off as. Common examples are New Zealand and Fiji (and other Pacific Islands that have similar coinage to ours), Philippines, Britain (50P with 50¢ -not round but different number of sides- 10P same size as 20¢). I did get a US State Quarter that came in a 10¢ bag; excellent condition too.

I have found a reasonable number of foreign coins, but mostly NZ or not that interesting. I found a US dime last night, which was a first for me.

i used to volunteer in a school canteen, at least once a week I would get a coin that was unusual, started buying them at face value or double for things like round 50cent piece, they wouldnt take more? but alas my kids done the same as what I suspect all the other kids did, raid some ones coin collection to buy an ice cream.
