I was lucky enough to get several rolls of the Boreal Forest Toonies (You can get them through the mint, plastic packed, in numbers up to 25, with no postage or handling), and a number of somewhat inter-related varieties came up in one roll. The ones I found are, with their totals in that 1 roll- 1) Pad on bottom right of S; Pad on 20-1 of date; Pad on ABETH II; Gold on Rev -6 2) Pad on bottom right of S; Pad on 20-1 of date; Pad on ABETH II Gold on Obv-3 3) Pad on bottom right of S; Pad on 20-1 of date; Pad on ABETH II Gold on Obv and Rev- 1 4) Pad on bottom right of S; Pad on 20-1 of date; Pad on ABETH II No Gold-6
5)No Pad on S; Pad on 20-1 of date; Pad on ABETH II No Gold-7
6)No Pad on S; No Pad on 20-1 of date; No Pad on ABETH Gold on Obv-1 7)No Pad on S; N0 Pad on 20-1 of date; No Pad on ABETH No Gold on Obv- 1 + 1 Roll (regular type)
The pad on the S is fairly small, but obvious with a 2-3 power glass, the pads on the 20 and last 1 of the date are much smaller, but obvious with a 5 power glass, and the pads on the ABETH II are smaller yet, except for the pad on the top left of the A, which is similar in size to the pads on the date figures. Some of these pads are between the vertical and top horizontal strokes of the E and T. The gold colouring looks to be like a paint, but is probaly some light sample of the metals that the centre ring is made of. It looks like someone started to paint around, or in a certain area outside of the central ring.
The die links show that the Pad on S die was linked to the Pad on the 20-1 and BETH die, and then separated. (or Separate, and then used together).
Sorry, but I have no images available.

A pad is a small bump or projection on any part of a number or letter- or call it a platform. I suspect it is caused by a small breakdown of the plating on a die. The pieces in this roll are remarkably the same. I have just opened another roll, and it is in an earlier die state- many of the pads are very small. I shall describe the coins in it when I get the roll completely looked at.

I got through the next roll- most of the coins in it seem to be from an earlier die state- they have very little, or almost no, pads on the ABETH II portion of the design, and on some, the pads on the 2011 are smaller, although not remarkably different. The totals now are 1) Pad on bottom right of S; Pads on 20-1 of date; Pads on ABETH II; Gold on Rev -6 2) Pad on bottom right of S; Pads on 20-1 of date; Pads on ABETH II Gold on Obv-3 3) Pad on bottom right of S; Pads on 20-1 of date; Pads on ABETH II Gold on Obv, Rev- 1 4) Pad on bottom right of S; Pads on 20-1 of date; Pads on ABETH II No Gold-8 5) Pad on bottom right of S; Pads on 20-1 of date; little Pads on ABETH II No Gold-10 6) Pad on bottom right of S; Pads on 20-1 of date; little Pads on ABETH II Gold on Rev-2 7) Pad on bottom right of S; Pads on 20-1 of date; little Pads on ABETH II Gold on Obv-3 8) Pad on bottom right of S; Pads on 20-1 of date; very little Pads on ABETH II Gold on Rev-1 9)Pad on bottom right of S; Pads on 20-1 of date; little Pads on ABETH II Gold on Obv, Rev-1
10)No Pad on S; Pad on 20-1 of date; Pads on ABETH II No Gold-10 11)No Pad on S; Pad on 20-1 of date; little Pads on ABETH II No Gold-3 12)No Pad on S; No Pad on 20-1 of date; No Pad on ABETH Gold on Obv-1 13)No Pad on S; N0 Pad on 20-1 of date; No Pad on ABETH No Gold on Obv- 1 + 1 Roll (regular type) I hope this is useful for someone here. I wonder if this thread should go in the varieties forum?

What does "Gold" or "No Gold" refer to? Minor offsets in the core?

There is gold on the coin around the outside of the inner circle, which looks like it might have been painted on the coin. It is definately not a gold-coloured planchet, I think in the burnishing and filing to make the surface matte, some of the gold from the inner circle was spread on the outer part of the coin. IMHO, it is just a product of the finishing process, and the amount, location, and width appears to be random.

The junk that the mint turns out these days sort of reminds me of the quality control of American Motors before they disappeared years ago! can hardly wait for polymer coins!

Well, this should be fun. I collect odd-looking toonies, as they seem to pop up once in a while.
