Ken Pines Coast to Coast www.coastcoin.com is offering 1838-1874 Shiled BAck Gold Sovereigns (Queen Victoria) at $299. Does this seem to be a good price to you all .. I have always loved the British Coinage with Queen Vic.

Maybe a little steep to me. The latest Guide down here puts an Aussie-minted shield sov at AU$275 in Fine, AU$325 in VF, and the old 19th century Krause puts Australian ones either the same or a little cheaper than their British counterparts the same date. There's US$150 worth of gold in a sovereign at the moment, and the same dealer's got King George V sovs selling for US$165 - not too much of a premium. For post-1848 coins, I don't think there should be that much of a difference - nearly twice the price.

Depends on condition, of course.

I just looked at all of their offerings, and they appear to be overpriced for the most part, IMHO.

Jim - I agree with the first two replies - the coin is only slightly above a bullion item and does not command the premium being attached. It is a blind way to buy gold - you might get a poor looking copy.

Thanks for the info Guys, I do appreciate it. The investiment art of the purchase sure thats good , I like the historical part most. but that is a little to much to pay for some history
