We all know that counterfeits abound on ebay.

But recently, some sellers have been mixing their terms when describing counterfeits. This may cause novice collectors to buy junk counterfeits thinking they are getting "rare" items. Here is an example:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Mexican-8-Reale...220066749192

This is a Modern Forgery - made for the Tourist Market - it is not even a good enough copy to call it a Numismatic Forgery.

Contemporary Counterfeit - as a technical Numismatic term refers to a Counterfeit made near the date of the original coins and intended to circulate alongside the originals as money or bullion.

These are usually but not always scarce to rare. There are some common contemporary counterfeits, but many are rare and valuable - hence the desire to call all Forgeries "Contemporary".

Anyone that has a counterfeit and who would like a second opinion on its origins - just post a picture and I will see what I can do.

As a follow-up to the particular coin I listed.

I wrote to the seller using the ebay "ask seller a question" feature. I informed him that the coin was a modern Chinese copy and not a contemporary counterfeit as he indicated. When I wrote I noticed that other questions were posted - three of them. Later when I checked back there were 4 questions posted but mine was not listed.

The seller has not replied to me as of now. If he never replies and if he keeps posting other questions - I would accept that as prima fascia proof of his intent to defraud.

That would put him on my "black list".

Here is another exceptionally common Chinese fake - Tourist type.
