Does anyone know what this odor is? Might it tarnish the coins long term?

The box looks like plastic, but it's supposed to be lacquered wood, which I think is where the smell is coming from. It's probably not good for us or the coins, so all of us who were foolish to keep it in the OGP are probably screwed. In a few years we'll have messed up coins and cancer.

Actually, I have no idea if it's harmful, but new car smell always gives me a bad headache.

I just worry if you even put the case in your safe if that smell would tarnish everything else in there too!

Isn't this why (the potentially harmful chemicals in the presentation cases) the coins are in air-tite holders?

The only smell I will experience will be the glorious smell of a box of slabs being returned to me. I have noticed that the 70's do smell much better...

You could store the boxes/COA's separately from the encapsulated coins.
No odd smells from my five.

The cases won't fit in my safe! I ended up carefully removing the 5 coins (still in their air-tight capsules) from each set and sticking them in my safe. The cases are now sitting in a neat pile in a closet. If I ever decide to sell a set, I'll just reassemble one.

I hated to do that, but it was either that, leave them out in the open, or buy a new safe just for these.

We have a couple. I am sure they will stumble upon this eventually.

Mine smell like exhaust, as in the USPS truck that took them away... I don't believe that truer words can be said about my Eagles as they fly off to their new owner...
