Hey CC, I am new here and was going through my State Quarter albums/random quarters from rolls and found quite a few plated quarters. Can anyone explain what they do with theirs? If they are plated, does that instantly make them not worth keeping? I checked my Red Book and strike it rich with pocket change, but I have only accumulated until recently starting to organize with errors/varieties etc. Thanks for any help!

Do you have any that you can post pics of? Different colors would be different things...

Jay, I am not sure how to get my pictures to appear more clear, working on them for you.
The coins are strange to me, like 2008 New Mexico appears proof, but its a P and the collar the whole way around appears almost red.
Not sure why this coin appears this way, sorry no pictures yet.

If they are the machinations of HSN, Littleton, and the like, they're only worth "face value". Private coin companies do lots of this to sell to the public. These Companies "Gold" plated and "Platinum" plated A LOT of the State Qtrs., and continue to do so. And they are doing it with the new America The Beautiful Qtrs. too. These will turn up in "circulation" all the time.....because they're only worth face value anyway, and once realized...they get "pitched".
The "precious metals" that they claim to use to "plate" the coins with, have been tested in "parts per billion" and there is BARELY enough recoverable precious metal contained on the coins to be worth ANYTHING at all. And the expensive process to "seperate" that precious metal off of the coins would make this very unpractical regardless.

Just did tissue test, not silver, just threw a curve ball at me since I have probably almost a roll of coins that have been plated. Guess I will go trade them in!

Guess eaglefoot summed it all up pretty well. I've seen some of them poping up in circulation already. At one bank I go to they had some Halves that looked like Gold, taken in from someone and couldn't get rid of them. Eventually your change will be filled with those.

If they were plated with Gold or Platinum I would keep them just as conversation pieces or for the kids to get from the tooth fairy, etc. Something one off, while not worth anything above face, is still "cool" sometimes.
Now if they are just not attractive or worthy of even a conversation, then to the bank they go!

I agree with bjones. While the coins probably don't have any value, that doesn't necessarily mean they are not interesting to look at or to show off. I would hold on to a few of them for a while, but once they start getting in the way of my "real" collection, off into pocket change they would go.

Sorry I have not checked back in, Thanks for all the replies...I can't believe that I even got one to be honest. Especially without jokes about not being the most hardcore, knowledgeable coin experts and knowing the difference. I really like this site so far, I am putting together my State Quarters at the moment. My dad bought me a Morgan Mint folder/map for them when I was younger. He works a lot and never finished putting the coins in and forgot we had the book. I just bought a Dansco album to move the nicer coins into and work on attaining the P,D,S coins. The current coins seem to be discolored from the material of the album. Thanks for answers again!
