Would silver dollars that are lightly cleaned defect the value?

always, any cleaning will lower the value unless it has bullion value

They are years I need for a set, and they are half price and one is a 1938 more expensive year.

I would say stay away from any cleaned coins. Even though some members on this site think it is ok to clean coins and that it is sometimes necessary. As you become a more experienced collector you will understand why I say this. Anyone who cleans coins is not good for the hobby.

Cleaning coins is only absolutely necessary if you collect ancient (medieval) coins, and find them in long lost locations... you have to clean them, just to figure out what the heck they are!

As always there is usually more than one answer.....for me any type of cleaning will reduce the value. Most people who have a decent reputation will list the grade along with the word cleaned....ie EF40 cleaned and price it at least one grade lower. If you look at the coin with your loop and see it is cleaned and not identified as such be very aware of over pricing

Define cleaning..............and then go look at the Ngc website particularily the NCS conservation part of the site. Then go read the PNG definition of "coin doctoring". After you have all become enlightened then we can define cleaning a little better. It is not as black and white as a lot of collectors think! There is a major difference between "cleaning" and "doctoring"..........Comments?
