I have been having a run of bad luck looking for 1972 5c coins.
I have been through more than $260 (5200+ coins!) without finding one!

somebody else on CCF reports having several hundred, accumulated over a long period. I've got two; but have found none this year. One went on ebay a few weeks ago, for only $3.25 - Item number: 230685735695 refers.

maybe you've been going through coins that others have already noodled and just taken back to the bank. i took back $400 to a branch the other day, thought wow, if someone was there for noodling, they'd be spewing!

Coinmantim, Are you taking your searched coins to a Sydney CBD Commbank branch? I think someone must be :-) I suspect that I am looking through already searched coins. However the coins have been a mix of rolls and bag (and even a few from a different branch). Bags could easily have been deposited at the branch, but the chubb rolls could come from anywhere (I think) and would at least get mixed with coins from different (hopefully not searched) locations. I looked through some more last night and the total is now $290 without having found any. Maybe I have just been a bit lucky till now and am a bit unlucky at the moment. I wonder how I will go today?

After another $80 I found one. I also found an error where a fair amount of detail on one side is missing and I think a clipped coin.

Is it possible that 1972 5c are being noodled out of existence in circulation? They are going for roughly $8 each on ebay so the few that haven't been lost/destroyed over the past 40 years are probably disappearing from circulation.

I'd imagine you are right MobOfRoos. With the amount being taken out of circulation because they're rubbish old ones, and the ones being noodled out, who knows how many will be left to be noodled in the years to come!
One lot of $100 I picked up I suspected was someone's old money box that had been sitting on a shelf for 40 years because there were 4 1972s and pretty much nothing after 1980. That was a very good bag ;)
OzCoins - the $400 I returned in one hit was to Blacktown Commbank! Usually I pick up from Windsor-
Have moved to Bathurst though now, have yet to noodle. Maybe the Central West will prove a goldmine for 1972's!

I've been having a little bit of luck over here in S.A. A few months ago I was back in Canberra for a while, and was only finding one 1972 5c in every $80 worth of rolls. The last two weeks here in S.A. I've been averaging 2 coins per $20 worth of coin bags. I don't think any banks over here has them in rolls I've been to a few different banks and they are always in the common zip lock bag or a few have the blue Armaguard ones. I prefer the rolls as I reckon the bank staff can't peek into them and pull all the good ones out!

G'day, I think it's the government taking anything pre 80's, if you've noticed in recent year the slow but steady decline in the 60's & 70's so I'd say soon the 80's will go on the "take out of circulation" list, so if your after them, grab them while you can..that's my 5 cents worth..I remember when it was 2 sorry people PS they've done the same with the notes if you take notice..harder to get the older polymer but in saying that the s hold out on us too. In recent months I have come across a heap of 5 dollar notes that are 2007 hot off the press, even got some running #'s most in mint not a mark on the(so where have these notes been for the last 4 years) makes you wonder..anyone else find this or just me. And I'm on the far north coast NSW. Cheers

First of all Ausjack have a great time here Interesting theory about the government take all the pre 80's 50c pieces out of circulation, I only started collecting this year so I can't add to your theory unfortunately, what do you guys think about the 5c pieces getting pulled out of circulation? I am yet to find a 1972 unfortunately ! Although I will continue to noodle for them and am hoping to get one soon.

Ausjack I've had a bit of luck over the past couple of days, I've found two 1972 5c in my noodling (thats two less in circulation now). Interesting theory about the pre 80s coins. I guess it makes sense when you look at the mintage figures over the past 10 years or so. Perhaps they need lots of new coins to replace the old ones they are taking out of circulation. As for the polymer notes, their life span is only about 15 years anyway so many of those early notes will have simply worn out.

Ausjack. Me thinks that we should start a new thread to track who is returning their noodled coins to which branches so that we can cooperate and not end up noodleing coins that have been noodled already...

AusJack...Great to see another Aussie aboard in here! I'm liking your theory too. Noodling through heaps of 5 cents I'm barely seeing anything earlier than the 80's. But all years in other denominations..20c, 50c etc. Sounds like a great idea Steve! A new thread and we say which branches we noodle from!

I found 4 in a bag of $100, sadly one looked like it had been washed in a washing mashine missing all detail on the queen.
