Hope this is a reasonable question posted in a reasonable part of the site - newby here...

inherited this coin: says on it "THE AUSTRALIAN KOALA 1 KILO 9995 PLATINUM 1993" letters surrount a picture of a koala grasping branch and looking to the right. Food scale says the weight is more like 4 ounces and it doesn't at all seem like 2.2 lb...

Looking into the plastic case there are ridges around the circumference and it does not appear that there is a design on the backside.

Any suggestions about the value of this and best way to sell it for fair value?

Thanks,

Chris

Sounds like you might have inherited a replica paperweight, rather than a bullion coin. I know Perth Mint still makes and sells replica gold kilo paperweights.

Hi Chris,
Welcome fellow newbi to CCF from Australia.
I've quickly checked out my "Aust. Coins and Banknotes" book and cannot find a 1993 1 kilo platinum Koala that would weigh 4 ounces ? (If it weighed 1 kilo it would be one of 3 minted and worth $48,000 Australian dollars back in November 2007 according to Greg McDonalds book).
It could be from a mini set but sounds a bit sus to me?
A photo would help a lot in nutting out the information you are after, and yes, you have come to the right place, I'm sure someone here at CCF will be able to help you out.
Cheers

Thanks to Sap and In2Fish2. I am embarrassed at the prospect that I may have distracted the forum and its expertise by wasting your time on a paperweight. I will post a photo tomorrow. My step-mother, in whose safe deposit box this lived until recently, was intelligent and sincere - so my first inclination is to trust that there's value in this coin, but maybe I have been (and she was?) misled about what she held. and it seems too good to be true that I would have walked into a $48K heirloom. Thank you for your kind replies. When I can post a photo (tomorrow) perhaps it will help resolve this.

thanks again,

Chris

I dunno.

If I thought I had a 1 kilo Pt bar, I'd probably distract the Pope trying to get answers on it.

Photos of the mystery coin. Does this help disambiguate what I've got?

Value-Of-1993-Australian-Koala-1-Kilo-Platinum?

Sorry, but looks like a paperweight to me given the weight. A great and simple test you can easily do at home to calculate the specific gravity of an item to work out its composition. Here is a great guide http://forums.silverstackers.com/to...is-real.html.
I hope you can publicly access the thread, if not post here and I will do a copy and paste job.

Thanks, Steve,

It seems like paperweight is the most likely evaluation. Serious platinum windfall is better news than I deserve...

Thanks for the specific gravity suggestion. I will look into that... Thanks for the offer of involved paste - I'll let you know if I can't track the reference... Thank you!
