Way to vague a question. For example a coin could have been dipped 50 years ago and then put into circulation and is now so worn, impossible to tell. A coin dipped a few years ago but then dropped into a pile of dirt for a few years too would not be noted as dipped. Some coins get put into washing machines by mistake, some are dropped into wishing wells and lots of other things that happen to coins. Attempting to tell if any coin has ever been cleaned, dipped, polished depends on so many things.

Yeah, I know vague question. I recently purchased a bust half, and I know they have all been cleaned at one time or another but it is my first "RAW" purchase and with a loupe there was a mildy pitted looking appearance but not to the naked eye.
I remember reading how dipping may etch out the surface and I don't know if that is what I was looking at and I could not make that out by looking at my slabbed bust halves. Is it just age......I don't know. I can't post an image now because I am at work but when I get home tonite I will try and post a pic

I'd say yes it's been dipped. Doesn't have any luster for how well-preserved it is otherwise.
