Hi everyone, I am unfamiliar with this bust type that I received in an uncleaned lot. It seems that this one was either clipped badly or struck with dies much larger than the planchet. Any ideas as to the possible emperor and mint? I really need help with this one, so any input would be appreciated!

The coin appears to be late Roman with the emperor wearing a diadem. Could be Constantius II.

Its difficult to say from the images you posted. I can't see anything on the reverse. What do you see in hand? As for the bust, it looks very similar to a Constantine I I posted here a few weeks ago. Take a look at these busts from Constantine:

I think there are some similarities in these and yours. Having said that, I would suppose there are some similarities with some of Constantine's relatives as well. The bottom line is that you need to clean it more if possible. There is not enough information for me to make a call. Sorry.

echizento & jwharper- thanks for the help! I appreciate it.

jwharper- I think that you are right. Great! And I have just looked on wildwinds, and I may have identified the reverse type:

Unfortunately, this coin is an example of a piece which was in an uncleaned lot, but is about as clean as it will get. There really is little actual dirt on the coin, just a lot of wear and other factors which have obliterated the design. While it looks better in hand, I just wish that it were possible to determine the mint. But this may forever be lost.

I don't think the referenced coin is the same as yours. RIC 190 has a helmeted bust, while I believe yours is diademed.

Diameter? - presumably a small LRB. I have many from my batch of uncleaned. It is common for them to be diademed, and it is common for the legends to be partially or fully missing. From the reading I've done, without the legend they are often impossible to definitively ID. :(

The reverse may be the most helpful in getting a good lead.
